KINESIOLOGY TAPING

What is kinesiology taping?

Benefits of kinesiology taping

Benefits of kinesiology taping

Kinesiology taping (KT) – or functional movement taping – is used to facilitate motion and inhibit pain and spasm. Kinesiology tape is a flexible material that moves when you move. When properly applied, the elasticity in the tape gently lifts the skin from the tissues below. This lifting creates a space to improve blood and lymphatic flow, which helps to alleviate pressure, reduce swelling and thereby enhance healing

What to expect in a treatment

  • The process will be explained to you, including where the tape will be placed and why, which will be dependent on your personal condition
  • The tape will be applied and the therapist will check range of movement is not compromised
  • The tape can be worn 24 hours a day and will not be damaged in water
  • The tape can last for 5-7 days, but typically lasts 3-4 days

Reduces pain – KT can be used to help decrease pain and muscle spasm that may occur after injury. It can help decrease nociceptive input to the brain, which can help decrease muscle guarding and protective spasm

Increases pain free range of motion – KT helps to create balance in the neural circuitry in muscles, tendons, joints, and skin, thereby reducing pain, decreasing swelling and improving muscle performance and function

Optimises recovery – KT helps to realign joint positions, and may also be useful in remodelling collagen such as in scar tissue management

Increases postural awareness – dynamic postural taping (DPT) can help improve awareness of posture and re-educate muscles and fascia

Increases proprioception – KT is thought to improve interaction between skin and underlying structures to help reset nervous system circuitry, improving muscular activation and performance
